‘Protein Drinks Should Carry Warning’: UK Official After Teen’s Death

Following the tragic death of a 16-year-old boy named Rohan Godhania from London, a senior UK official has suggested that health warnings should be added to protein drinks. Rohan fell ill on August 15, 2020, after consuming a protein shake and passed away three days later at West Middlesex Hospital due to irreversible brain damage. The exact cause of his illness was initially unknown, and his organs were donated before the hospital could determine the cause.

Protein Drinks Should Carry Warning

Rohan’s father had purchased the protein shake to assist his son in building muscle, as he was described as being “quite skinny.” However, it was later discovered that the protein shake triggered a rare genetic condition called ornithine transcarbamylase (OTC) deficiency. This condition led to the breakdown of ammonia in Rohan’s bloodstream, resulting in lethal levels of ammonia accumulation.

During the inquest held at Milton Keynes Coroner’s Court in Buckinghamshire, a post-mortem examination initially failed to identify the cause of Rohan’s death, which was later determined to be OTC deficiency, a rare disease.
