Protests erupt across China against China’s zero-Covid policy

On Saturday, protests broke out all around China, notably in campuses and Shanghai, where hundreds screamed “Xi Jinping, down your voice! Communist Party, resign! “in an unprecedented act of defiance against the strict and costly zero-Covid policy of the nation.

The public is becoming increasingly frustrated with China’s strict anti-virus policy as they grow sick of sudden lockdowns, protracted quarantines, and widespread testing operations.

A fatal fire that occurred on Thursday in Urumqi, the regional capital of Xinjiang in northwest China, has reignited public unrest, with many accusing Covid lockdowns of impeding rescue attempts. Officials refute the allegations.

On Sunday night, between 300 and 400 people gathered for several hours on the banks of a river in Beijing, China, with some yelling: “We are all from Xinjiang! Chinese people, go!”

A line of police vehicles was waiting on the other side of the canal bank while the gathering sang the national anthem and listened to speakers, according to AFP reporters who were on the scene.

Several hundred protestors who stayed after midnight (1600 GMT) waved blank pieces of paper to represent censorship while cars honked in solidarity.

Several livestreams that were shortly restricted showed crowds going through the streets celebrating and recording on their phones in Wuhan, the central megacity where the coronavirus first appeared.
