Punjab News: In a major setback for students from Punjab aspiring to study in Australia, the Australian government has significantly increased the student visa fee for international students from AUD 710 to AUD 1,600. The hike, more than double the previous amount, was confirmed by Union Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, in response to a query by MP Neeraj Dangi.

Australia as an Emerging Alternative to Canada

Following Canada's strict immigration and student visa policies introduced earlier this year, Australia had become a favored destination for Indian students, particularly from Punjab. Many students had shifted their focus from Canada to Australia, viewing it as a viable alternative for pursuing higher education abroad.

Increased Financial Burden on Middle-Class Families

The steep rise in visa fees is expected to impose a significant financial burden on middle-class families. The increase, amounting to nearly ₹50,000 in Indian currency, could impact students' plans to pursue education in Australia. For families already stretched thin by the high costs of international education, this change adds another layer of financial stress.

Government Intervention on the Matter

Union Minister Kirti Vardhan Singh stated that the Indian government has raised the issue with the Australian authorities. “The India-Australia partnership in education is a vital aspect of our bilateral relationship, encompassing economic, academic, and people-to-people ties,” Singh noted, emphasizing the importance of maintaining strong ties in the education sector.

Implications for the Future

The hike in visa fees is likely to deter some prospective students, prompting families to reassess their plans. It remains to be seen how the Australian government responds to concerns raised by India and whether alternative solutions will be explored to alleviate the financial impact on international students.
