Putin says more US-Russian prisoner exchanges are possible

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that more US-Russian prisoner swaps are possible in the future.

WNBA star Brittany Griner was released on Thursday in a prisoner swap with the US exchanging Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout.

Asked if other prisoner swaps could be made, Putin said on Friday that “everything is possible.” He added that more US-Russian prisoner swaps are possible in the future.

Under the agreement between the two countries, Russia has released Griner in exchange for arms dealer Viktor Bout. However, the US has been unsuccessful in securing the release of another US national, Paul Wheelen, who has been incarcerated since December, 2018.

WNBA star Brittany Griner is back in her home state of Texas

Ten months after leaving the US to play basketball in Russia, WNBA star Brittany Griner is back in her home state of Texas. He was released through an exchange of prisoners. Griner was jailed in February for transporting drugs at a Moscow airport. He was exchanged on Thursday for Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout. Griner was airlifted to San Antonio, where he would receive medical care. White House spokesman John Kirby told MSNBC Friday morning that Griner was in good health.

President Joe Biden was the first to announce that Griner was returning home on Thursday. Biden’s wife is expected to meet Griner in San Antonio at the White House. “Brittany has faced an unimaginable situation and we are thrilled she is going home to be reunited with her family and friends,” NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement about the return.

Griner was arrested in February, just days before Russia invaded Ukraine. She is one of America’s most famous female players. The double Olympic champion was the star center for the Phoenix Mercury in the WNBA during the US basketball season. His reason for flying to Moscow was to play in Russia during the off-season in the US. During his trial in Russia, he said the drugs found in the bag were an “honest mistake”.
