Queen Elizabeth II Funeral: The passing of Queen Elizabeth II set in motion an orderly series of ceremonial and legal formalities as Britain entered a period of national mourning and the reign of King Charles III.

The queen’s oak coffin was brought from Scotland’s Balmoral Castle to a seven-vehicle entourage by six of the estate’s gamekeepers. It was then gently driven through rural Scottish towns and villages on the way to Edinburgh. People gathered in great numbers in Edinburgh and on rural roads to pay their respects along the route. It spends the night at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in the Scottish capital. Charles was accepted as the new monarch by Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The queen’s coffin will be carried by the king and queen consort to St. Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh, where it will remain for 24 hours so that people can pay their respects. The queen’s coffin is driven to the airport in Edinburgh by a hearse. It will be flown to London and delivered to Buckingham Palace by the Royal Air Force. The gun carriage transporting the coffin from Buckingham Palace to Parliament is followed by the king and other royals. The Canterbury archbishop conducts a brief liturgy there in the revered Westminster Hall of Parliament. The queen would then lie in state for the following four days, right up to the morning of her burial.
