Sri Lanka Economic Crisis Latest Updates: Ranil Wickremesinghe has been appointed as the new Prime Minister in Sri Lanka, which is facing the severe economic crisis of its history. He is the leader of United National Party (UNP). He lost the Parliament election last time. Interestingly, his party has only one seat in the Sri Lankan Parliament. Despite this, due to his closeness to the Rajapaksa family, he has been successful in becoming the Prime Minister of the country.
According to sources, many other parties including Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, a faction of Jana Balavegaya have announced their support for the appointment of Ranil Wickremesinghe. UNP President V Abeywardena expressed confidence that Ranil Wickremesinghe will secure a majority in the 225-member parliament. Ranil Wickremesinghe has been made the PM of the interim government at present. His government can run for 6 months. During this, he will have to make arrangements to get the country out of the economic crisis.
UNP is the oldest party in Sri Lanka. Despite this, in the general elections held in the year 2020, this party could win only one seat. Even the PM candidate Ranil Wickremesinghe himself lost the election from Colombo.
Ranil Wickremesinghe has been the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka 4 times. Maithripala Sirisena, the then President, removed him from the post in October 2018. However, after 2 months, he again had to reinstate Ranil on the post.
Meanwhile, opposition parties of Sri Lanka have also started demanding the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapakse. The no-confidence motion against Gotabaya Rajapaksa will be discussed in Parliament on May 17.
According to the news published in ‘The Daily Mirror’ newspaper, several opposition parties took a decision in this regard in the meeting held on Thursday. Discussion on this proposal will be started after getting special approval in Parliament.
