The controversial self-styled godman Nithyananda is once again in the news. Representatives of Nithyananda’s self-proclaimed country ‘Republic of Kailasa’ have attended a meeting of the United Nations. In this meeting, its representatives have demanded protection for Nithyananda, describing him as the “supreme priest of Hinduism”. Its representatives have participated in the meeting of the United Nations Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR) held in Geneva on 24 February. Photos of the meeting were posted on Nithyananda’s official Twitter account with the information that the women’s delegation participated in the discussion on “equal and inclusive representation of women in decision-making systems”.
Representative accused of harassing Nithyananda
One of Kailasa’s representatives is seen in a video of the event uploaded on the UN website. The woman representing Kailasa is dressed in a sari, turban and ornaments. She is talking about the sustainable development going on in her country. Its representatives also said that all basic needs such as food, housing, clothing, education and medical care are “given free” at Kailash. The representative further said that Nithyananda has been harassed and even banned from the country of his birth for reviving the ancient traditions of Hinduism. Its representative asked the UN body what measures could be taken at the ‘national and international level’ to stop the persecution of Nithyananda.
Nithyananda is an accused in a rape case in India
Nithyananda is an accused in a rape case in Ramanagara, Karnataka. In which a non-bailable warrant (NBW) was also issued against him in August last year.
A rape case was registered in 2010 on the basis of a complaint by Lenin, Nithyananda’s former driver. The controversial tantrik was arrested at that time though he was later released on bail.
