Rival Sudanese faction agree to a ceasefire after 17 die in Khartoum

Khartoum: Reuters reports that 17 people, including 5 children, have died in an airstrike in Khartoum on Saturday. Meanwhile, rival military factions, the Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support Forces have agreed to a 72-hour ceasefire.

The ceasefire, which began early Sunday, was brokered by Saudi Arabia and the United States. This is the third truce between both factions in recent months.

Sudanese Army’s aircraft routinely attack dense neighbourhoods in Khartoum which are controlled by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.

The Sudanese Army had posted a message on Friday warning people to stay away from houses occupied by the RSF. “Because at this point, we will attack them anywhere,” he said to cheers. “Between us and these rebels are bullets,” General Yassir al-Atta said in that message. Observers say the Sudanese Army is not interested in any peace efforts.

More than 2.2 million Sudanese have been displaced in the conflict. According to Sudan’s health minister, 3,000 people have died and more than 6,000 have been wounded in the Sudanese Civil War.

A grave humanitarian crisis

Many residents in Khartoum are unable to leave their homes. There is no water or electricity in many parts of the capital.

The conflict has spilt over to Darfur, which lies southwest of Khartoum. Many eyewitnesses have reported attacks on civilians by Arab gangs affiliated with the RSF.

Thousands have fled to the Chad-Sudan border hoping to find refuge in the western neighbour.

Reuters says more than 1,000 people have died in Darfur due to strikes by RSF-allied militias.

60 children die in an orphanage

The civil war has also affected young children. An India Today news report says that at least 60 children trapped in an orphanage in Khartoum have died due to hunger and disease.

Furthermore, 27 of these children died over the past two days.
