Russia becoming a Chinese colony, says CIA chief

CIA Chief: William Burns, chief of the CIA has said that Russia was becoming a junior partner of China and a colony of the East Asian nation. He was making these remarks while delivering a speech at a British non-profit focussed on British- US relations.

Burns was the US ambassador to Moscow between 2005 and 2008. He was appointed to head the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) IN 2021.

“Challenge to Russia”

The CIA director said PMC Wagner’s revolt was a challenge to the Russian state and it also showed the corrosive effect of President Putin in Ukraine.

Last week, PMC Wagner, a mercenary force headed by Yevgeny Prigozhin revolted against Moscow. Prigozhin’s main target was two of Russia’s top military generals. The Wagner chief had been using crude language and prison slang against these generals before launching a revolt against Russia.

“It is striking that Prigozhin preceded his actions with a scathing indictment of the Kremlin’s mendacious rationale for the invasion of Ukraine and of the Russian military leadership’s conduct of the war,” Burns said in his lecture.

The CIA chief also said, “The impact of those words and those actions will play out for some time – a vivid reminder of the corrosive effect of Putin’s war on his own society and his own regime.”

“Economic colony of China”

Burns pointed out that Moscow’s “future as a junior partner and economic colony of China” was being shaped ” by Putin’s mistakes.

The United States has never interfered and never will in Russia’s internal affairs, he emphasized.

However, the US will recruit spies in Russia and take advantage of the dissatisfaction in the country.

“That disaffection creates a once-in-a-generation opportunity for us at the CIA – at our core a human intelligence service. We’re not letting it go to waste,” he added.
