Russia- Ukraine War: The Russian defence ministry claims to have killed hundreds of pro-Kyiv troops, according to a Monday report by Reuters.
Russia said it had stopped a major Ukraine attack at five points south of Donetsk in Ukraine. This attack comprised six mechanised and two tank battalions. Moscow has long suspected that Kyiv will launch a major offensive to drive a wedge between its defences on the Russian front.
“On the morning of June 4, the enemy launched a large-scale offensive in five sectors of the front in the South Donetsk direction,” the Russian ministry said in a statement on Telegram.
The statement further said that Ukraine wanted to break through Russian-held positions in southern Donetsk.

On Sunday, June 4, the Russian defence minister published a tweet that said, “Words are very unnecessary They can only do harm.” This tweet hinted at a potential Russian action. The Russian defence ministry also posted a video showing several armoured vehicles burning on the battlefield.
Last week, Kyiv put up a video that showed its soldiers gearing up for battle.
Was it a counterattack?
It isn’t clear whether Russia repelled a long-promised Ukrainian counterattack.
Ukrainian President Zelensky has been promising a counter-offensive on Russian positions for several months now. He has made his intentions clear in an interview with the Wall Street Journal.
Zelensky has raised billions of dollars in military aid from the West.However, he hasn’t disclosed when the counterattacks would begin.

Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine began on February 22, 2022, and Russia had hoped to make quick gains initially. However, it suffered several setbacks during the initial stages of the war.
Presently, Russian troops have occupied 18% of the Ukrainian territory. Moscow has also annexed several Ukrainian regions which have Russian-speaking people.
