In light of the conflict in Ukraine, Russia has offered to assist India in overcoming the oil price cap imposed by western countries. In this regard Deputy Prime Minister of Russia met Indian Ambassador to Moscow Pavan Kapoor on Friday.

In a statement the Russian Embassy in India said, that in order not to depend on the ban on insurance services and tanker chartering in the European Union and Britain, the Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Alexander Novak has offered India cooperation on leasing and building large capacity ships.

Further, the statement said that in the first eight months of 2022, Russian oil exports to India grew to 16.35 million tonnes and in the summer, Russia ranked second in terms of oil shipments to India.
India’s decision to continue purchasing oil from Russia despite the conflict in Ukraine has drawn criticism from Western countries. India has frequently urged for peace talks with Ukraine, but it has been steadfast in its decision to continue purchasing oil from whomever offers the best price.
However, it is a logical strategy to negotiate for the best price in the interest of the Indian people, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said parliament on December 7. The government does not require Indian corporations to purchase oil from Russia.
