Russia-Ukraine War: The most casualties in a single day have been recorded by Russia, where at least 1,000 unarmed Russian soldiers were killed by Ukrainian forces. According to the Ukrainian defence ministry, up to 71,200 Russian soldiers have perished in the fighting thus far.
In its most recent escalation, Russia has abandoned a grain export agreement with Ukraine that was mediated by the UN. The UN and Turkey mediated the agreement in July. Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, demanded security guarantees from Ukraine after alleging that Kiev attacked Russian ships in Crimea via the grain corridor.
Days after missile attacks destroyed vital infrastructure in the war-torn nation, water and power supplies in Kyiv were fully restored.
Following are the major developments.
- A few days after British defence intelligence analysts claimed that “several thousand” recently mobilised Russian soldiers (most of whom are reservists) deployed to the front line are “poorly equipped,” the Ukrainian ministry of defence reports that nearly 1,000 soldiers have been killed in the past 24 hours.
- Reservists were conscripted into the Russian military as part of a call-up push to combat the war in Ukraine. Sergei Shoigu, the Russian defence minister, reported that 41,000 reserve soldiers were activated and sent to the front lines. President Vladimir Putin issued the order for the mobilisation last month after his forces suffered significant defeats on the battlefield for the first time since they began their invasion of Ukraine in February.
- In the midst of the conflict, Russia withdrew from a deal with Ukraine to export grains that was mediated by the UN. Following Kyiv’s alleged Saturday “massive” drone attack on its fleet, which Ukraine referred to as a “false pretext,” Russia made the announcement. President Vladimir Putin informed President Erdogan of Turkey on Tuesday that Russia would only consider restarting the grain contract with Ukraine following an investigation into the drone assaults on the Sevastopol naval facility in Crimea.
- Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine, responded to Russia’s action by stating that the agreement’s provision for a grain shipping corridor to get food out of his nation needs reliable, long-term protection. Any actions by Russia that interfere with our food exports would be met with a strong response from the rest of the world, he continued.
- After withdrawing out of the UN-mediated agreement, the United States accused Russia of deciding to let the developing countries “starve.” “Moscow is unconcerned about international hunger. Moscow is not concerned whether people go hungry. If the global food insecurity situation worsens, Moscow doesn’t care “declared a US official.

- On Twitter, the UN official in charge of coordinating the agreement’s exports of grains and fertilisers stated that he anticipates loaded ships to depart Ukrainian ports on Thursday. Oleksandr Kubrakov, the minister of infrastructure for Ukraine, posted on Twitter that eight vessels were anticipated to use the lane on Thursday. As the Russian army experiences setbacks on the eastern and southern fronts, Russia has changed its strategy on the battlefield and is now methodically attacking the Ukrainian energy infrastructure. Kyiv’s forces in the south are getting ready for tense fights to retake Kherson and the surrounding area.
Along with Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk, and Lugansk, Kherson is one of the four territories that Moscow claims to have annexed but does not entirely control.
- President Vladimir Putin said that Russia launched missiles at Ukrainian towns, including the capital Kyiv, in retaliation for an attack on its Black Sea Fleet over the weekend. Although the majority of those missiles, according to Ukraine, were shot down, some of them struck power plants, cutting off water and electrical supply.
- The new escalation by Vladimir Putin was in reprisal for the destruction of the Kerch Bridge on October 9—a vital lifeline to Crimea. Russia claimed that Ukraine was responsible for the blast and labelled it a terrorist attack, which Kyiv refuted. According to Ukraine, the attacks on the electrical grids are done to freeze the population throughout the winter.
- More than 40% of Ukraine’s power-generating capacity was destroyed by recent missile and drone strikes, resulting in electricity rationing and nationwide outages. They mark the beginning of what can be a chilly and gloomy winter in Ukraine as the conflict continues.
