Russia-Ukraine War: Canada is reportedly set to send 39 armored combat support vehicles to Ukraine this summer to help in its defense against the Russian invasion. Canadian Defence Minister Anita Anand announced the news on Thursday.
The General Dynamics-mode armored vehicles are manufactured at a plant in London, Ontario, and these vehicles are extremely versatile in usage: they can be used as ambulances, maintenance, and recovery vehicles, or to carry troops.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced at the end of the NATO summit in Madrid last week that the fleet is part of a wider C$500 million package of military aid noted in the last federal budget, in a bid to further arm Ukrainian defenders with modernized military equipment.
The vehicles were originally meant to be operated by the Canadian Armed Forces, but have been redirected by the government to the front lines of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. It is hoped that the vehicles will help bolster Ukrainian defenders currently waging a grinding war of attrition against their enemy.
On Thursday. July 7, the Canadian Defence Minister, Anita Anand, visited General Dynamics Land Systems Canada, the manufacturing plant that produces the vehicles.
Anand thanked employees for their role in defending the country’s values, telling them of the importance of their work in not just the defence of Canada, but safeguarding democracy internationally.
“As we navigate a world increasingly under threat, your work is absolutely critical,” she said. “Through your determination and skill, you are contributing to a Canada that is strong at home, a Canada that is secure in North America.
“Thanks to you, those who wear the Canadian flag on their uniform have the equipment they need to defend our values and undertake critical life-saving missions.”
Anand also told reporters that the armored vehicles deal is part of a separate multi-billion dollar contract for 360 vehicles for the Canadian armed forces that was negotiated with General Dynamics Land Systems in 2019.
“Those 39 vehicles will begin to ship this summer, and the remaining 360 will continue to be delivered over the next number of months as well,” she said.
