Russia-Ukraine War: During the Asia Pacific Economic Conference in Bangkok on Friday, French President Emmanuel Macron asked Asian countries to join the “growing consensus” against the conflict and said that the crisis in Ukraine is also their “issue.”
Given that the conflict in Ukraine is a significant contributor to global instability, Macron stated that promoting peace there and working to create a “global dynamic to put pressure on Russia” are France’s top priorities.

On the sidelines of the Pacific Rim summit, Macron was quoted as stating, “This war is also your problem, because it will create a lot of destabilization.”
Macron positioned France as a balancing force in the Asia-Pacific region, which has long been dominated by the rivalry between China and the United States for superpower dominance.

Regarding the US and China, Macron stated in his speech, “We are in the jungle and we have two big elephants, trying to become more and more nervous.” At a time when US-China tensions are at an all-time high over Taiwan’s future, human rights, trade, and China’s rising aggressiveness, a balancing act is called for.
