A Russian A-50 surveillance aircraft has been destroyed at an airfield near the Belarus capital of Minsk. The Belarussian anti-government activists have claimed responsibility for the attack and stated that drone attack was responsible for blowing up the Russian Military aircraft.

Aliaksandr Arazov , leader of Belarussian anti-government organization BYPOL, was quoted as saying on the organization’s Telegram messaging app on the Poland based Belsat news channel,
“Those were drones. The participants of the operation are Belarusian,”
“They are now safe, outside the country.”
However, media reports have not been able to independently verify the report of the attack and there has been no immediate response from the defence ministries of Russia and Belarus. Belsalt is a Polish broadcaster, which focuses on news which are Belarus and Minsk has branded it as an extremist organization. BYPOL comprises of former law enforcement officers who support the opposition parties in Belarus and has been branded by Minsk as a terrorist organization.

Franak Viacorka, an advisor to Belarussian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya has confirmed on Twitter that that this was the most successful act of sabotage since beginning of 2022.
BYPOL reported that two explosions damaged the front and central parts of the aircraft as well as the radar antenna were damaged in the attack at the Machuliashchy air base near Minsk.
The Beriev A-50 aircraft, has a NATO reporting name of Mainstay and is a Russian airborne early warning aircraft, with airborne command and control capabilities, with an ability to track up to 60 targets at a time.
Belarus a staging post for Russian Forces
Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko is an important ally of Russia and has not taken active part in Russia’s war on Ukraine. However, he has allowed Russian forces access to use territory as a staging post at the beginning of the invasion a year ago.
Russia and Belarus have set up joint military unit in Belarus and a number of Russian warplanes and airborne early warning and control aircraft have been deployed in Belarus.
Tsikhanouskaya wrote on Twitter,
“I am proud of all Belarusians who continue to resist the Russian hybrid occupation of Belarus & fight for the freedom of Ukraine,”
