Russia Ukraine War: According to officials on Friday, Russian missile strikes overnight targeted several Ukrainian cities, including the capital Kyiv. The central cities of Dnipro and Uman were struck by strikes that claimed the lives of at least five people. Last winter, Russia frequently bombed Ukrainian cities and infrastructure, but recent months have seen a reduction in these massive attacks. More than 50 days had passed since a missile had attempted to hit Kiev.
A young woman and a three-year-old child died
The industrial Donbas region is currently the scene of the majority of fighting, especially for control of Bakhmut, which has been nearly completely destroyed. In the city of Dnipro, missiles “killed civilians again,” according to Borys Filatov, the mayor, who also noted that “a young woman and a three-year-old child died.” Kyiv’s air defence systems were also turned on, according to local authorities.

11 cruise missiles were shot down in Kyiv airspace
According to the city administration, Sergey Popko, the commander of the local air defence forces, declared that the enemy had launched another missile attack on Kyiv after a 51-day break. “Preliminary information indicates that 11 cruise missiles were shot down in Kyiv airspace. Along with the missiles, two drones were also destroyed. Building damage or casualties were not reported. In recent months, Western weapons essential to Ukraine’s war effort have been delivered, strengthening the country’s air defence system. Russia and Ukraine have been at war since Moscow invaded in February 2022. According to Ukraine, a counteroffensive that aims to drive Russian forces away from the areas they currently control in the east and south has been planned for months.

In April, Kyiv in particular received the sophisticated American Patriot systems. The capital was the target of an attack last week by 12 Iranian-made drones, eight of which were shot down without causing any casualties, despite the fact that it had not been subject to missile barrages since early March. A video broadcast by Ukrainian media showed a gutted apartment block with debris all around it in Uman, a central city of 80,000 people.
