According to local officials, at least one person killed and three were hurt during Russia’s nighttime airstrike on Kyiv, which saw the defensive systems shoot down at least 20 drones heading for the capital.
A 41-year-old man was murdered in the Solomyanskyi neighbourhood of the city by drone debris that fell on a petrol station, according to Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kiev. According to the military administration in Kiev, the strike on the city left at least three persons hurt.
“Air defence forces have already destroyed more than 20 UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) moving towards Kyiv,” Klitschko said on the Telegram messaging channel. “But a new wave of drones is coming to the capital. Stay in shelters.”
According to Reuters witnesses, several people stood on their balconies during the air raid alerts that began to sound just after midnight on Sunday, with some shouting phrases like “Glory to air defence.”
In the Solomyanskyi neighbourhood, west of the city, a seven-story non-residential building was struck by falling drone debris, according to Klitschko. This caused a fire to start. The area is a bustling rail and airport transportation hub.
According to Kyiv’s military administration officials on Telegram, a fire started on the roof of a nine-story building in the Pecherskyi district, a historically significant area of the city, as a result of falling drone debris.
