The Pakistan Supreme Court has declined to quash the criminal proceedings against Imran Khan in the Toshakhana case.
The former Pakistan Prime Minister was disqualified by the Election Commission (ECP) in October 2022 for concealing facts about the gifts received by him and deposited in the Toshakhana.
Toshakhana is a repository of all the gifts received by the Pakistan prime minister from various heads of states. As PM, Imran Khan was supposed to accurately record all the gifts received by him while being in office from 2018 to 2022.
Disqualified for corruption
The Election Commission of Pakistan says Imran Khan did not reveal all the gifts received by him to the former and therefore disqualified the former prime minister.
Khan then approached a trial court challenging the decision of the ECP. However, the trial court upheld the ECP’s ruling and indicted the Pakistan Tehreek-i- Insaaf chairman.
Imran Khan later challenged the trial court’s decision in the Islamabad High Court which sent the case back to the trial court for re-examination.
Subsequently, Khan, 70, approached the Pakistan Supreme Court which said it will not interfere in the ECP’s decision. However, the two-judge bench of the apex court urged the Islamabad High Court to decide on three of Khan’s petitions regarding the IHC’s decision to send his case back to the trial court.
‘Punished for being independent’
There are more than 100 cases lodged against Imran Khan across the country. These range from murder, terrorism, blasphemy, corruption and violence. These cases were filed against the former prime minister after he lost a no-confidence motion last April.
The current Pakistan government is also thinking of prosecuting Khan under the Army Act.
Khan says he was ousted by the United States and others because he wanted to pursue an independent foreign policy.
