In what US police described as a gathering at a short-term rental property, three people were shot dead and four others were injured on Saturday at a house close to Beverly Hills.
Overnight, emergency services rushed to the posh address in Los Angeles’ Benedict Canyon area where they discovered three bodies inside a parked car.
Two of the four other patients being treated for critical injuries on Saturday were at a hospital.
This is California’s fourth large-scale shooting this month. According to The Los Angeles Times, detectives looking into the attack claim it took place in a “short-term rental residence.” Homes close to the scene of the shooting – which were not involved – were shown as available on AirBnB at up to $10,000 for a weekend.
The property at which the shooting took place was not listed on the site. Police said there was some kind of gathering at the location.
“We called it a gathering, until we can interview some of the people that were here to determine exactly what kind of gathering it was,” Los Angeles Police Department’s Bruce Borihanh told reporters.
“Investigators are also going door to door and looking for additional surveillance video, or any evidence that can help us determine what happened here and why these victims were shot.”
The early Saturday morning attack follows last week’s massacre at a dance hall in a suburb of Los Angeles, which left 11 people dead and nine others injured, as well as shootings at two farms in Half Moon Bay, which left seven people dead and one injured.
Huu Can Tran, opened fire on attendees at a ballroom dance club
Last Saturday, Huu Can Tran, 72, opened fire on attendees at a ballroom dance club in the primarily Asian neighbourhood of Monterey Park, where tens of thousands had earlier enjoyed Lunar New Year celebrations.
He attempted to drive to a different dance hall, but an employee stopped him. Later, Tran committed suicide as police surrounded the van in which he was sitting.
According to authorities, a man shot and killed four people on Monday at the mushroom farm where he worked before driving to another farm where he had previously worked and killing three more. Chunli Zhao, 66, is being held in custody and is accused of murder in what the police have labeled a case of workplace violence.
The killings have hurt the state because it has some of the nation’s tightest gun restrictions and the fewest gun fatalities.
The US saw over 600 mass shootings in 2022, the third consecutive year that at least four people were killed or injured, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
