Israel: Following a fierce rocket attack from the blockaded Gaza Strip, Israel has declared a ‘state of war.’ Palestinian Hamas militants claim it was their “first strike,” with more than 5,000 rockets launched towards Israel on a festive holiday morning, accompanied by blaring sirens across the country.
PM Netanyahu to convene a meeting soon
The country’s defense forces have accused Hamas militants, whom they label as terrorists, of infiltrating. Visuals from Israel revealed the use of paragliders in the attack, with shots fired at passing cars on the roads. The Milatry said, “The Israel Defense Forces declares a state of readiness for war. There has been widespread rocket fire into Israeli territory from Gaza, and terrorists have infiltrated Israeli territory through various entry points.”
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office has announced that he will soon convene a meeting of security officials. The Israeli government has asserted that Hamas will face severe consequences for its actions. This recent surge in violence represents a significant escalation in geopolitics, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Sirens are sounding in the holy city of Jerusalem and throughout Israel, with reports of multiple impact points in southern and central regions of the country.
The armed wing of Hamas has announced the commencement of “Operation Al-Aqsa Flood” and claimed to have launched over 5,000 rockets during the initial 20-minute onslaught. Leader Mohamed Deif said, “We have decided to put an end to all of this, with the help of God, so that the enemy understands that the time of recklessness without accountability is over.”
Long-standing conflict between Israel & Palestine
Israel and Palestinian militants have engaged in multiple conflicts since Hamas assumed control of Gaza in 2007. The recent escalation follows heightened tensions when Israel closed its borders to Gazan workers. This year, the conflict has resulted in the deaths of 247 Palestinians, 32 Israelis, and two foreigners, encompassing both army and civilians.
