Sudan violence: Thousands flee Khartoum as 270 dead in army-paramilitary clash

Sudan violence: Thousands of civilians fled Khartoum — a city of five million people — as heavy gunfire raged in the streets. Witnesses reported deafening explosions and thick black smoke from buildings around the army headquarters.

Reports said bodies lying in the streets as more than 270 civilians were killed in battles between the army and paramilitaries.

“Life in Khartoum is impossible if this war does not stop,” said Alawya al-Tayeb, 33, who was fleeing the city. “I tried to make children not see the slain bodies on the streets,” she said, adding that her youngsters are already suffering from trauma and will need treatment.

Ceasefire fails again

The Rapid Support Forces paramilitaries and also the army said they would “fully commit to a complete ceasefire” from 1600 GMT for 24 hours. But the ceasefire failed as clashes continued in Khartoum till Wednesday night, said witnesses.

The Sudanese army said they had evacuated 177 Egyptian soldiers who had been captured by the RSF in the northern city of Merowe. They were sent back to Egypt — a close ally of the military establishment — on four Egyptian military transport planes.

Many foreign diplomats have been attacked and UN reported sexual violence against aid workers.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced he would meet Thursday with the heads of the African Union, the Arab League and regional bloc the Intergovernmental Authority on Development.

Power struggle between two generals

The violence erupted on Saturday between forces of the two generals who seized power in a 2021 coup. Army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his deputy Mohamed Hamdan Daglo who commands the RSF, have been engaged in a power struggle to take control of the strife-torn country.

Heavy gunfire continued in the streets and many buildings around the army headquarters were engulfed in thick smoke.

Residential and commercial buildings are heavily damaged. Civilians holed up in homes are becoming increasingly desperate as food supplies are dwindling. Power outages, and a lack of running water is making things even worse.
