The Taliban-controlled central bank has seized nearly $12.4 million in cash and gold from former top government officials. The list also includes former vice president Amrullah Saleh.
“The money and gold had been kept in officials’ houses, although it did not yet know for what purpose,” said the central bank in a statement.
However, former President Saleh’s whereabouts are unknown and he has vowed to resist the Taliban government. Last week his brother Rohullah Azizi was executed by the Taliban, said a family member as saying by Live Mint.
The central bank issued a circular last week to local banks and asked them to freeze the accounts of politically exposed individuals linked to the previous government.
