Afghanistan: According to reports, the Taliban on Monday forbade families and women from entering eateries in Afghanistan’s Herat region that had gardens or other outdoor areas. Following complaints from religious leaders over gender mixing in these settings, the decision was made. According to Afghan officials, the limitations were put in place to prevent gender mixing or because women are allegedly not covering their heads with the hijab. The restriction currently only applies to eateries in the province of Herat that have outdoor spaces.
All eateries were off-limits to families and women
Only restaurants in Herat, where such spaces are still open to males, are exempt from the restriction on outside dining. According to Fox News, Baz Mohammad Nazir, a subordinate official from the Ministry of Vice and Virtue’s Herat directorate, refuted media allegations that all eateries were off-limits to families and women and dismissed them as misinformation. According to him, it only applied to establishments that had outdoor green space, like a park, where men and women might mingle. “We set restrictions and closed these restaurants after receiving repeated complaints from academics and regular people.”
They have barred girls from attending schools past the sixth grade
Head of the Vice and Virtue directorate in Herat Azizurrahman Al Muhajir remarked, “It was like a park but they labelled it a restaurant and men and women were mingling. Thank God it has now been fixed. Additionally, our auditors are examining every park that both men and women frequent. It was the latest in a litany of limitations imposed by the Taliban since they took control in August 2021. They have barred girls from attending schools past the sixth grade and women from universities and the majority of occupations, including those at the UN. They are also prohibited from using public facilities like gyms and parks.

Taliban had vowed to restore all schools
The plight of women in Afghanistan has gotten worse since the Taliban seized power there in August 2021. In this nation, women are not allowed to hold positions of authority and are not permitted to work or travel without a male companion. On March 23, this year, the Taliban had vowed to restore all schools, but instead they closed secondary schools for girls. The reopening of these institutions, their likelihood, and if the prohibition is temporary are all still unknown.
