Prabhakaran: On Monday, the Sri Lankan government dismissed claims made by Pazha Nedumaran, the leader of the Tamil nationalist movement, that the head of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), Velupillai Prabhakaran, was still alive. The government dismissed the statement as a “joke,” asserting that even DNA testing had confirmed Prabhakaran’s death.
Nedumaran earlier claimed Prabhakaran is still alive
Nedumaran, a long-time supporter of Prabhakaran, called a press conference in Thanjavur on Monday and read out a statement, insisting that the LTTE chief was still alive and that the time was right for him to reveal himself. However, he failed to provide any evidence to support his claim and maintained that he was in contact with the LTTE leader and could not disclose any further information.
In May 2009, the Sri Lankan military ended the nearly three-decade-long civil war by killing the top leadership of the LTTE, which had been carrying out a violent campaign to establish an independent Tamil state in the northern and eastern provinces of Sri Lanka. Prabhakaran’s death in the conflict was widely reported and confirmed by DNA testing, as noted by the Sri Lankan government.
The claims made by Nedumaran have raised concerns in Sri Lanka as the country tries to move on from the painful memories of the war. The Sri Lankan government has been working towards reconciliation and healing, and these unsubstantiated claims could further complicate the process.
The long Sri Lankan civil war
Sri Lanka’s nearly three-decade-long civil war, which started in 1983, came to an end in May 2009 after a bitterly fought campaign by the country’s army, which led to the killing of LTTE leaders. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) was engaged in a violent campaign to establish an independent state for the Tamils in Sri Lanka’s northern and eastern provinces. The conflict took a heavy toll on the country, resulting in thousands of casualties and displacing countless individuals. The end of the war marked a significant turning point in Sri Lanka’s history, as the government began the process of healing and reconciliation.
