These are the world’s most liveable cities in 2023

Austria’s capital Vienna has been named the ‘world’s most liveable city’ for 2023, according to a list released by the Economist Intelligence Unit. The list includes the names of 173 cities around the world that are ranked based on a number of important factors including health care, education, stability, infrastructure and environment. Five Indian cities – Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Chennai, New Delhi and Mumbai – also figure in the list based on their performance in various metrics.

EIU is a sister organization of The Economist and releases its Global Liveability Index every year. After Vienna, Copenhagen of Denmark retained its position in second place. Australia’s Melbourne and Sydney are also on the third and fourth place in this list. Canada has the most 3 cities in the top 10 – Calgary, Vancouver and Toronto. Two Swiss cities also top the list of Most Liveable Cities, with Zurich in sixth and Geneva tied for seventh with Calgary. Osaka of Japan has secured the 10th position.

5 cities of India are included in the top 100

Bengaluru and Ahmedabad from India, with Chennai a little behind at 60th position. New Delhi and Mumbai have secured 60th position in the EIU list. “The lifting of Covid-related restrictions bodes well for global livability in 2023,” Upasana Dutt, head of the Liveability Index at EIU, said in a statement”Education has emerged stronger as children return to school, with some notable improvements in cities in the developing economies of Asia and the Middle East, reducing the burden on hospitals and health care systems,” he said.

UK capital London and Sweden’s capital Stockholm have dropped 12 and 22 places to 46th and 43rd places, respectively. According to the EIU, Damascus has been the least liveable city in the index for more than a decade. Kiev, which is trying to save itself from war, is also in the bottom 10.
