Bangladesh has been thrust into the international spotlight due to escalating violence against its Hindu minority. Renowned global voices, including Johnnie Moore, former US Commissioner on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) under the Trump and Biden administrations, have strongly criticised the government led by Muhammad Yunus. Moore, also known for his role as President Trump’s spiritual advisor, expressed grave concerns about the lack of safety for minorities in the Muslim-majority nation.
Bangladesh Violence: A Grim Reality for Religious Minorities
The arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das, an ISKCON priest and spokesperson for the Bangladesh Sammilit Sanatan Jagran Jote, has sparked outrage. Moore voiced his dismay at this high-profile arrest, stating, "Bangladesh isn’t just a Muslim country; it’s a Muslim-majority country with a rich mosaic of minorities. The recent targeting of a Hindu leader sends a chilling message to all minorities—if they can go after him, no one is safe."
Temples being set ablaze in Chittagong, homes looted, and properties vandalized have become disturbingly common. These incidents have laid bare the inability—or unwillingness—of the Yunus government to protect its vulnerable citizens.
Former Leaders and Organizations Speak Out
Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister, has openly condemned the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das, demanding his immediate release. In a strongly worded statement, she highlighted the systemic violence, saying, "The religious freedom and safety of all communities must be ensured. Attacks on temples, mosques, churches, and monasteries harm our nation’s fabric."
ISKCON has also rallied behind its detained leader, denouncing the sedition charges as unjust. The incident in question reportedly involved raising a flag on a stand displaying the national emblem—hardly an act warranting such severe repercussions.
Atrocities on Hindus: A Global Concern
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has also weighed in, urging the Bangladeshi government to safeguard its Hindu population. The ministry stated, "The multiple attacks on Hindus and other minorities, including arson, theft, and desecration of temples, paint a grim picture. We call on the Bangladeshi government to uphold its commitment to protecting all citizens."
Muhammad Yunus: Failing to Uphold Justice?
Despite his reputation as a Nobel laureate and a champion for social causes, Muhammad Yunus faces mounting criticism for his apparent failure to maintain law and order. Moore’s remarks laid it bare: "The first responsibility of any government is to protect its people. If a leader like Chinmoy Krishna Das can be targeted, what hope is there for ordinary citizens?"
