Israel

Israel: Thousands of Israelis protested government judicial reforms in Tel Aviv late on Saturday because they believe them to be an assault on democracy. After Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared a “pause” to allow for discussion on the reforms that were advancing through parliament and dividing the country on March 27, protests entered their fifteenth week in a row.

Smaller demonstrations were also held outside Justice Minister Yariv Levin’s Modiin residence

Within a sea of Israeli flags waved by protesters, banners reading “Let’s save democracy” could be seen. Smoke bombs and flares were reportedly let off, according to reports. Smaller demonstrations were also held outside Justice Minister Yariv Levin’s Modiin residence and in the northern port city of Haifa. Tens of thousands have reportedly shown up, as in some prior protests, according to Israeli media.

The ideas would increase political control over judicial selection while reducing the Supreme Court’s power. The amendments, according to Netanyahu’s government, are required to rebalance the authority between the legislative branch and the judicial branch. This coalition government is made up of members of the extreme right and ultra-Orthodox Jewish movements. The protest took place on Saturday, one day after US rating agency Moody’s declared that Israel’s outlook had been changed from positive to stable. As seen by recent events surrounding the government’s proposal to revamp the nation’s court, it was stated that the change reflects a worsening of Israel’s governance.
