Pakistan’s Defense Ministry has cited political instability in the country, rise in terrorism and “threat of war with India” as obstacles to holding provincial elections. According to the report of the ‘Dawn’ newspaper on Thursday, the report submitted by the Ministry of Defense to the Supreme Court said that elections in the politically important Punjab province will increase problems in Pakistan and India will benefit from ethnic issues, water dispute and other issues.
The ministry submitted its report along with an application requesting the apex court to recall its order on the date of elections, saying there would be a threat of terrorism if the elections to the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assemblies were held before the elections to the other provincial Assemblies. There is a possibility of increase.
Told the danger of war with India
A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial, while hearing on April 8, fixed May 14 as the new date for the elections to the Punjab Legislative Assembly and set aside the decision of the Election Commission to extend the election date from April 10 to October 8.
According to the paper, the report said that Pakistan is facing cross-border terrorism, instability in the country, threats from the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP), Islamic State (IS) fighters returning to Pakistan from several countries, “Indian spy agency evil designs” and “threat of war with the neighboring country (India)”. The report pointed out that the security situation over the years has necessitated the deployment of security forces along the country’s eastern and western borders.

The report also expressed apprehension that Pakistan would continue to be a victim of a “global game” dominated by India. The report states that Pakistan is threatened not only by insecurity from external aggression but also by internal instability. It added that the two things are linked “as turmoil in the country invites external aggression.” Referring to Punjab province, the report said that from January 2022 to April 2023, many terrorists Incidents have also happened. However, the report expressed hope that the recent agreement between China, Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan to counter terrorism would yield better results in six to eight months.
