Twitter: It has started happening now. Twitter has started removing verified blue check marks from profiles of users who don’t subscribe to the micro-blogging platform. Many users said on Thursday they had lost their verified blue check marks. They can continue to post but without the blue tick. From now on, only users who have subscribed to pay Twitter Blue verification service will have blue ticks on their profile.
After several false starts, the platform began making good on its promise to remove the blue checks from accounts that don’t pay a monthly fee to keep them. It had about 300,000 verified users under the original blue-check system. Many of them were journalists, athletes and public figures.
Oprah, Bieber, Beuonce, Trump lose blue check
As the day progressed, celebrities like Oprah Winfrey, Justin Bieber, Katy Perry and Kim Kardashian had lost their check marks. Public figures relating to all sectors of society, from Bill Gates to Pope Francis, also lost their checks. Others who lost their blue checks also included Beyoncé and former President Donald Trump.
The checks meant the account was verified by the platform to be who it says it is. From Thursday, the verification mark began disappearing from many users’ profiles.
Pay and use
Individual users can pay $8 a month while organizations will have to pay an amount beginning from $1,000 a month for verification. Each affiliate or employee account will have to pay $50 a month. However, Twitter does not verify the individual accounts, as was the case during the platform’s pre-Musk administration.
A popup message for some users who still had a blue check indicated that the account “is verified because they are subscribed to Twitter Blue and verified their phone number.” As per Twitter, verifying a phone number simply means that the person has a phone number and they verified that they have access to it — it does not confirm the person’s identity.
It wasn’t just celebrities and journalists who lost their blue checks Thursday. Many government agencies, nonprofits and public-service accounts around the world found themselves no longer verified, raising concerns that Twitter could lose its status as a platform for getting accurate, up-to-date information from authentic sources, including in emergencies.
