Twitter to allow politicians to advertise through tweets

On Tuesday, Elon Musk made the decision to reverse the ban on political advertisements that had been implemented on Twitter to counter the spread of misinformation. This move took place after Elon Musk acquired the platform, now rebranded as “X.” The decision to allow potentially misleading political content back onto X occurred shortly before former President Donald Trump’s return to the platform. Trump’s appearance marked his first post on the platform since January 2021.

In his post, Trump shared a photo from his police mugshot following an arrest in Georgia. This act symbolized his comeback to a platform that had been his primary means of communication during his tenure as President. This post came after a significant hiatus that followed the tumultuous events at the US Capitol on January 6, where a mob of his supporters attempted to disrupt the certification of Joe Biden as President.

Twitter had taken the step of permanently suspending Trump in the aftermath of the January 6 riot. The reason for the suspension was Trump’s violation of Twitter’s policy against promoting violence. This violation was linked to his dissemination of false claims about the election being stolen from him.

Although Elon Musk, who had acquired the platform in the previous year, reinstated Trump’s account in November 2022, the former President had chosen to stay away from the platform. Instead, he focused on connecting with his followers through his own platform, Truth Social, albeit with a smaller audience compared to his Twitter following.
