Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was fined by British police on Friday for creating a social media clip while riding in the backseat of a car without wearing his seatbelt, which might be embarrassing for him as he tries to change around fortunes of his party.
Without using a seat belt, Sunak, who apologised on Thursday for what he called a “short lapse of judgement,” recorded a video in the backseat of his car while driving through the north part of England.
It is the second penalty Sunak has gotten from the police since they found him and former prime minister Boris Johnson had broken the COVID-19 lockdown rules the prior year.
The fine is a new hurdle for Sunak, whose Conservative Party is now performing significantly lower than the opposition Labour Party in the run-up to an election scheduled for at least January 2025.
“The prime minister has apologised and fully accepts that this was a mistake. He will, of course, abide by the determined punishment, according to a statement from Sunak’s Downing Street office.
A 42-year-old man from London got a penalty notice, according to police in the county of Lancashire in england.
After Johnson, Mr. Sunak is the second prime minister to pay such a fine.
