UK Govt: According to Free Press Journal, the British Government is planning to cut back on immigration. The latest move on restricting immigration was planned a month back, according to sources who are aware of this development.
Under this restriction, from 2024, overseas students will no longer be permitted to bring in their families to the United Kingdom.
This restriction won’t apply to students enrolled in PhD programmes and those in research-led master’s courses.
According to available information, Indian students outnumber Chinese in terms of education visas. In 2022, 161,000 Indian students came to the U.K. for education. They brought in 33,240 dependents.
A British government official said the new rules are aimed at stopping overseas students from finding work after completing their education in the United Kingdom. These new rules come into effect on January 1, 2024.
The Rishi Sunak-led government also wants overseas students to prove that they can support their families while studying in the country.
“Protecting our public services”
According to Business Today, Home Secretary Suella Braverman told the House of Commons that the new rules are aimed “to better protect our public services, while supporting the economy by allowing the students who contribute the most by coming here”.
The current visa rules allow post-graduate students whose courses last 9 months or more to bring in their partners and dependents.
Targetting fake marriages
The new UK visa rules are being seen as an attempt to stop overseas students from misusing the dependent visa. A dependent visa allows the spouse to find work in the United Kingdom.
Meanwhile U.K. Deputy Foreign Minister Tariq Ahmad said the revised regulations will not affect Indian undergraduate students. Speaking to NDTV, he said, “Those students who come for undergraduate studies and research will always be welcomed”.
