Uganda: 25 people killed in an attack by IS affiliate rebel group

Uganda: At least 25 people have been killed while further 8 people left injured, in a terrorist attack in a Ugandan school. The ambush was perpetrated by Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) – a Ugandan group based in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and is reported to have links with Islamic State.  There are speculations that death toll may rise to 40 as bodies are left to be uncovered. “So far 25 bodies have been recovered from the school and transferred to Bwera Hospital. Also recovered are 8 victims, who remain in critical condition at Bwera Hospital.” Ugandan police said on twitter.

Perpetrators being pursued by authorities

During the attack carried out on Friday night, the school dormitory was burned while the food store was also looted. The attackers also detonated bomb in the region leading to speculation of more casualties. The attack was carried out in a secondary school in the town of Mpondwe which is about 2 kms from the border with DRC. The police authorities and Uganda Peoples’ Defense Forces (UPDF) are in active pursuit of the attackers, who have fled towards Virunga National Park. So far the authorities have not disclosed the number of children who died in the attack.

 Hostility of Allied Democratic Forces (ADF)

ADF was created in the 1990s to counter then President; Yoweri Museveni alleged persecution of Muslims and their ultimate aim was to topple the regime in Uganda. In a horrific attack in June 1998, 80 students were burnt to death in their dormitories by ADF at Kichwamba Technical Institute. After Ugandan forces repelled the group, it relocted to DRC’s bordering province of North Kivu. The group has also been active in DRC and has claimed thousands of lives in last 2 decades.  Ugandan and DRC authorities have carried out multiple counter-insurgency operations against the terrorist grouping. The U.S. State Department designated the ADF an Islamic State affiliate as well as a Foreign Terrorist Organization in 2021
