UK: Court dismisses Rishi Sunak’s Rwanda asylum plan as unlawful

Rishi Sunak has stated that he will challenge the decision in UK's Supreme Court.

Rishi Sunak: In a major blow to British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak‘s government currently grappling with high inflation, rising interest rates and declining public support, a UK court has declared Rwanda asylum plan as unlawful. The move was forwarded by government to stop asylum seekers arriving in small boats to UK waters.

As per the 140 million pound deal struck last year, UK sought to transport thousands of asylum seekers from its shore to East African nation of Rwanda, some 4000 miles away. The Court of Appeal has declared that Rwanda cannot be guaranteed as a safe third country. On Thursday, the verdict was passed by a ten to two majority. The government has asserted that the deal will stop human trafficking but the critics has deemed the plan unsafe. PM Sunak has announced that the government would now appeal in Supreme Court of the UK.

“I fundamentally disagree with their conclusions”

The UK PM Sunak has stated that while he respects court’s authority, the decision that has been produced by the court is not acceptable to him. He said “While I respect the court, I fundamentally disagree with their conclusions,”

Sunak has made “stop the boats” as one of his five top priorities order to get some relief and help steer Conservative Party in right direction to deal with many problems facing the country. The UK General Election is scheduled for next year and Sunak seeks to lead Conservative Party into a triamiphos win.

Last year European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) blocked deportations putting stop to a Rwanda deportation flight from UK at the last minute. In December, UK High Court declared the move as lawful but was challenged by human rights groups and asylum seekers from Middle Eastern countries.

Court’s verdict

The court said that it has sufficient grounds to believe that those sent to Rwanda will eventually be sent back to their home countries where they will face ‘persecutions and inhumane treatment.’

Lord Chief Justice Ian Burnett said “The result is that the high court’s decision that Rwanda was a safe third country is reversed and that unless and until the deficiencies in its asylum processes are corrected removal of asylum-seekers to Rwanda will be unlawful.”

In a response to judgment Interior Minister Suella Braverman said, “Today is a bad day for the British people. Today is a good day for the people smugglers,” in the Parliament.

Yvette Cooper of the Labour Party said “The Rwanda scheme is unworkable, unethical and extortionate.” Most of the asylum seekers come from France and there are no legal routes for asylum seekers.

The opposition attacked Sunak by stating that he has no real plan to solve migration issue and he should scrap the charade of Rwanda Plan.

Meanwhile Rwandan government’s spokesperson Yolande Makolo has said “Rwanda is one of the safest countries in the world and we have been recognised by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and other international institutions for our exemplary treatment of refugees.”
