29 MPs are now behind Penny Mordaunt.
Just hours before the deadline to submit their nomination, Boris Johnson, who lost his job as leader in July and left office in September, announced his withdrawal from the race.
By Monday at 2 p.m. local time, Rishi Sunak will take over as Prime Minister if Mordaunt is unable to secure the approval of 100 MPs.
The party has set a threshold of 100 MPs for candidates to even get on the ballot paper, and there are a total of 357 MPs in the party, thus under the rules announced on Thursday, only a maximum of three Tory MPs will be eligible to run.
Around 170,000 Tory members will vote quickly online for the last two contenders, and the next leader will be chosen by next Friday.
