President Zelensky is seeking an opportunity to speak “directly” with Chinese leader Xi Jinping to help end the war with Russia.
The South China Morning Post reported on Thursday that the Ukrainian president is willing to put their differences aside to help end the war in Ukraine.
The Ukrainian leader sat down for an interview with the SCMP, urging China to use its political and economic influence over Russia to bring an end to the fighting.
“It’s a very powerful state. It’s a powerful economy…so (it) can politically, economically influence Russia. And China is a permanent member of the UN Security Council,” Zelensky was recorded as saying.
Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, in a major escalation that has been ongoing since 2014.
The invasion caused shockwaves across the globe, creating the largest refugee crisis in Europe since the Second World War. More than 6.3 million Ukrainians fled the country, and a third of the population was displaced.
