Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, stated on Saturday that the fighting in the country’s east was becoming more intense and that Russia was sending additional forces into the fray.
After several months of defeats, the Kremlin has been pushing for a decisive victory on the battlefield. Russian forces are vying for control of the nearby key supply route for Ukrainian forces as well as the town of Bakhmut.
In the eastern part of Donetsk, around 120 kilometres (75 miles) southwest of Bakhmut, Russian forces are also attempting to take the coal-mining city of Vuhledar.
“I’ve often had to say the situation at the front is tough, and is getting tougher, and it’s that time again. … The invader is putting more and more of his forces into breaking down our defences,” Zelenskyy said in his nightly video address.
“It is very difficult now in Bakhmut, Vuhledar, Lyman and other directions,” he continued.
Russian attempts to breach the defences in Bakhmut and Lyman had failed, according to a Telegram message from deputy defence minister Hanna Malyar earlier in the day.
Immediately north of Bakhmut, Lyman was freed by Ukrainian forces in October.
Zelenskyy promised on Friday that his troops would defend Bakhmut “for as long as we can,” but the situation there is getting worse for Ukrainian forces.
Numerous combat encounters have been reported daily
Numerous combat encounters have been reported daily by the high command of the Ukrainian armed forces, while a number of unverified Russian victories have been reported by military bloggers in Moscow.
The Kremlin acknowledged that Russia has lost servicemen as a result of the battle in the area of Bakhmut.
Russia’s independent news outlet Meduza reported in late January that some 40,000 of the 50,000 recruits by the powerful Wagner private military group involved in the campaign there were either dead or missing.
