Russia-Ukraine War

Russia-Ukraine War: In the ongoing Ukrainian military campaign that uses unmanned vehicles to target distant Russian assets both in the air and at sea, one of Russia’s largest oil tankers experienced a significant attack. A maritime drone struck the Russian-flagged vessel, known as the Sig, with a payload of 450 kilograms (992 pounds) of TNT shortly before midnight. According to a source from the Ukraine Security Service, the drone attack caused a breach in the ship’s engine room, resulting in flooding on the starboard side at the waterline. Now, Russia has vowed to retaliation on the incident.

Russia vows retaliation

The 11-member crew had to take immediate action to combat the water intake, but fortunately, they managed to halt the flooding eventually. This incident marked the second sea attack involving drones within a day, as earlier on Friday, Ukraine had targeted a significant Russian port. In response to the attack on the civilian vessel in the Kerch Strait, Moscow has vowed retaliation. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova strongly condemned the action, labeling it a Ukrainian “terrorist attack” on a civilian ship.

She stated, “There can be no justification for such barbaric actions, they will not go unanswered and their authors and perpetrators will inevitably be punished.” A Ukraine Security Service official, speaking on condition of anonymity as he lacked authorization to issue official statements, confirmed that their agency was responsible for the attack on the tanker.

Traffic halted due to the attack

The vessel was carrying fuel destined for Russian forces. The attack was carried out using a sea drone loaded with 450 kilograms (992 pounds) of TNT, as disclosed by the official. During the attack, traffic on the Kerch Bridge and ferry transport experienced a brief halt. To aid the tanker, which is subject to United States sanctions for its role in supplying jet fuel to Russian forces in Syria, tugboats were dispatched, as reported by Russia’s Tass news agency.
