Preliminary findings from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) indicate that the first week of July marked the hottest week ever recorded globally. This announcement comes in the wake of a scorching June, which already held the record for the hottest June on record due to the combined effects of climate change and the early stages of the El Nino weather pattern. These records are part of a broader trend of extreme weather events occurring this year, such as drought in Spain and intense heatwaves in China and the United States.

The rising temperatures are not limited to the Earth’s surface but also extend to the oceans, posing potentially devastating consequences for ecosystems and the environment. The WMO warns that we are entering unknown territory, with more records likely to be broken as the El Nino pattern continues to develop. These impacts are anticipated to persist until at least 2024, according to Christopher Hewitt, the WMO Director of Climate Services.
The WMO arrived at this conclusion by analyzing data from various partners worldwide. The organization emphasizes the significance of this news for the planet, highlighting the urgent need to address climate change and its detrimental effects.
