United States: Shocking Bodycam Video; Police Officer Shoots and Kills Pregnant Black Woman

United States

United States: In a bodycam footage obtained by Ohio police, a black pregnant lady is shot by a police officer as she struggles to get out of the car. Ta’Kiya Young, age 21, was shot and killed inside her automobile on August 24. This is according to a report in the New York Post. According to the news source, the woman was being questioned by police about an alleged larceny incident.

Dramatic Sequence of Events Leading to Tragic Shooting Incident

In the video shared by the Blendon Township Police Department, the woman is seen seated in her black sedan while an officer repeatedly asks her to “get out of the car”. She questions why she should do the same and said “I’m not going to do that.” The cop adds, “They said you stole stuff, do not leave.” Ms Young replies, “I didn’t do s***, the other girls was taking (stuff)”. The next step is for one of the officers to stand in front of the vehicle with his gun drawn and left hand on the hood. “Get out of the f car!” he yells. The cop fired a shot after the 21-year-old began to accelerate while dodging him. The vehicle is then shown slowly driving through the parking area before slamming into a grocery store’s brick wall. The police run behind the car and put a gun at the driver’s side window while yelling at the woman to “stop the goddamn car!” The second cop tries to open the door but is unsuccessful. Then, in order to get to Ms. Young, who was hunched over the central console of the car, he breaks the glass window that was partially open. The two-parent mother and her unborn kid were both shot, according to the police, but neither survived. In November, she was supposed to give birth.

Family Condemns Tragic Shooting and Seeks Justice

Ms Young’s family said in a statement, “Having viewed the footage in its entirety, it is undeniable that Ta’Kiya’s death was not only avoidable, but also a gross misuse of power and authority.” They are seeking a criminal indictment of the officers. While the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations investigates the event, the officers have been placed on paid administrative leave.
