United States: The 66-year-old woman in the United States suddenly began “gasping for air” inside a body bag after a nursing home sent her body to a funeral home under the assumption that she had passed away, according to a report. According to a report released on Wednesday by the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals, the nursing home, Glen Oaks Alzheimer’s Special Care Center in suburban Des Moines, Iowa, is now facing a $10,000 (Rs 8.2 lakh) fine for declaring an alive person dead. According to the report, the facility failed to give residents “dignified treatment and care at the end of life,” and as a result, it was fined the maximum amount allowed by state law.
Nurse practitioner admitted that she had not seen the woman breathe
The outlet claims that on January 3, a staff member had trouble locating the woman’s pulse. The patient, who had recently been transferred to the facility’s hospice care, had early-onset dementia, anxiety, and depression. The woman had mild seizures, “diminished” lung sounds, and irregular skin marks days prior to the incident, according to the department’s report. The worker, whose 12-hour shift was about to end, made a helpline call. According to the report, the nurse practitioner admitted to the investigators that she had not seen the woman breathe and had not been able to locate a heartbeat. The 66-year-old patient was pronounced dead about 90 minutes after the first staff member voiced concerns, according to The Post.
Failed to provide proper instructions
Despite neither the funeral home employee nor the second nurse practitioner observing any signs of life on the woman, she was placed into a body bag and transported to the Ankeny Funeral House & Crematory where staff members discovered she was still alive. According to the report, “At around 8:26 a.m., funeral home staff observed Resident #1’s chest was moving and she was gasping for air and unzipped the bag.” After the funeral home dialed 911 in the US, she was taken to a nearby hospital. The 66-year-old was later discovered to be still breathing but not moving. After the incident, she was transferred to a nursing home where she passed away on January 5, two days later, with her loved ones by her side. Despite the fact that the state found that the care facility “failed to provide proper instructions to ensure that appropriate cares and services were provided” before the woman was declared dead, the Ankeny police department has decided not to file any charges.
