US announces military assistance for Ukraine worth USD 275 million

The US Department of Defense on Friday announced another military aid package of US $ 275 million (about Rs 22.66 billion) for Ukraine. The package includes additional ammunition for the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS), 80,000 155 mm artillery rounds and counter-unmanned aerial system equipment.

In addition, the aid package announced by the US includes counter-air defense capability, High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWVs) ambulances and medical equipment, about 150 generators and field equipment. This announcement has been made amidst the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. The US Department of Defense reported that the US has provided more than US $ 19.3 billion (about Rs 15.91 trillion) in military aid since Russia launched a military invasion of Ukraine on February 24 this year.

According to the statement released by the US Department of Defense, the military aid package will provide Ukraine with new capabilities to strengthen its air defense. The US has been providing military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine in particular since Moscow launched its offensive in Kiev. The US Department of Defense said in a press release that this security assistance package will provide Ukraine with new capabilities to boost its air defense, in addition to providing critical equipment that Ukraine will use to effectively defend itself on the battlefield.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said that the US will continue to provide military aid to Ukraine to help Ukraine defend itself against Russia’s “brutal and unprovoked attack”. Blinken said the latest military package is the 27th shipment of US arms and equipment to Ukraine from August 2021. He stressed that the United States will continue to work with more than 40 allies and partners to support Ukraine as they defend their freedom and independence.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the frontline situation in the Bakhmut, Soledar, Marinka and Kremina regions of Donbass remained very difficult, according to a statement issued by the Ukrainian President’s Office. In his video address on December 9, Zelensky stressed that there is no place left to live in these areas because of the heavy damage caused by the shelling.
