Bridge Collapse Incident Overview
A 948-foot container ship struck a four-lane bridge in Baltimore port during the early hours of Tuesday, resulting in the collapse of the bridge and vehicles plunging into the Patapsco River below. Rescuers managed to extract two survivors, one of whom remains in critical condition, while efforts to locate others are ongoing.
Preliminary Findings and Rescue Operations
Maryland Governor Wes Moore stated that initial investigations suggest the incident was an accident, with no evidence of terrorism involved. Eight individuals were on the bridge during the collision, with six still unaccounted for. The collapse prompted an active search and rescue mission by the U.S. Coast Guard.
Details from Transportation Authorities
The Maryland Secretary of Transportation, Paul Wiedefeld, revealed that repair work was underway on the bridge when the collapse occurred. Sonar scans detected submerged vehicles in the river, which was approximately 50 feet deep at the site of the incident. Governor Moore affirmed that the bridge was compliant with safety regulations and had no known structural issues.
