US: In addition to providing a tornado and flood threat to a huge portion of the South, the first significant winter storm system to hit the United States this year deposited a frigid mixture of snow, freezing rain, and sleet from the Northern Plains to the Upper Great Lakes region on Tuesday.
Intense snowfall of 1 to 3 inches (2-1/2 to 7-1/2 cm) per hour, occasionally accompanied by thunder, is likely in some areas of Nebraska, South Dakota, and Minnesota on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). More than a foot of snow is anticipated to build.

Dangerous driving conditions were predicted in other regions due to snow fog, mist, and freezing rain

The wintry blast was a part of a bigger weather system that brought severe thunderstorms, hail, and tornadoes to the lower Mississippi Valley, Gulf Coast, Tennessee Valley and southern Appalachians.
A large portion of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia were under severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings, with flood watches placed around the southern edge of that area.
As of Tuesday night, the NWS had received eight reports of tornadoes, in addition to several reports of severe winds that had harmed homes, trees, and power lines.

Another “atmospheric river,” or high-altitude circulation of concentrated moisture, was anticipated to hit the West Coast starting on Wednesday, bringing soaking rains and the potential for further flooding in northern and central California.
On Wednesday, it was expected to rain near the coast and snow at higher elevations in the Pacific Northwest and Sierra Nevada mountains.
After a weekend Pacific storm that caused flooding, mudslides, power outages, and road closures, Northern California was still recuperating.
Santorelli warned that strong winds could uproot trees and break off tree limbs as part of the newest round of approaching downpours, resulting in more power outages.
According to data from poweroutage.us, up to 21,000 homes and businesses in northern California were without power early on Tuesday.
