US: Indian-origin doctor charged for sexually assaulting female patients

According to the Department of Justice, a senior primary care doctor of Indian ancestry who regularly saw four female veterans over the course of a year has been charged on multiple charges with sexual assault.

The department recently issued a press release accusing Rajesh Motibhai Patel, 68 years old, of acting illegally and violating his patients’ constitutional right to bodily integrity by engaging in unwanted sexual contact while working at the Veterans Affairs Medical Centre in Decatur, Georgia.

According to Michael J. Missa, the inspector general for Veterans Affairs, veterans and their families demand and deserve the best healthcare available, delivered in a “safe and accountable setting,” which contrasts with the abuse they endured.

“Patel allegedly sexually abused his female patients between 2019 and 2020 and violated his oath to do no harm to patients under his care,” said US Attorney Ryan K Buchanan.

“Our Veterans have made incredible sacrifices for our country and deserve the best medical treatment and highest quality of care,” Buchanan was quoted to have said in the release.

According to reports, an Indian-origin man was previously found guilty in Australia of drugging and raping five Korean women while filming the crimes with a concealed camera in April.

Balesh Dhankhar, a well-known political activist from the Indian diaspora in Australia, was on trial for 39 offences, including 13 counts of rape that were allegedly committed between January and October 2018. In mid-April, a jury at the Sydney District Court found Dhankar guilty on all counts.
