Nancy Pelosi to quit leadership position but will stay in the Congress
Nancy Pelosi, the first female Speaker of the House and the party’s longtime leader in politics, legislative strategy, and public image, announced on Thursday that she will step down from the leadership positions in January in the wake of close elections that cost Democrats their majority.
Pelosi, a leftist 82-year-old from California, made her declaration during a speech on the House floor, amid cheers from Democrats despite many Republicans opting not to attend. She declared that she would continue to represent San Francisco as she has for the past 35 years and would not leave the House.
