US President Joe Biden on Tuesday dialled Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to send him best wishes on his Liberal Party’s election win, the White House said in a statement.
The two leaders “underscored the strong and deep friendship between the United States and Canada,” the statement said, adding, they also discussed “their shared commitment to strengthening the resilience and competitiveness of their economies and coordinating their pandemic response.”
A statement from Trudeau’s office said the two North American leaders “reiterated the importance of the mutually beneficial Canada-US partnership for the security and prosperity of both countries” and “committed to getting together in person soon” to discuss bilateral cooperation.
The US President and Canadian Prime Minister also “discussed China’s arbitrary detention of Canadian citizens Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig,” the statement added.
Even though Trudeau’s Liberals won Monday’s snap election, it failed after a hard-pressed campaign to gain an absolute majority in parliament.
After a bumpy five weeks of campaigning, the Canadian prime minister speaking to the general public said that brighter days are ahead.
“You (Canadians) are sending us back to work with a clear mandate to get through this pandemic into brighter days ahead,” Trudeau said, flanked by his wife Sophie Gregoire and their children on stage at a victory gala. “That’s exactly what we are ready to do,” he said.
