A rare development which has the potential to elevate the Indo – US relationship on next pedestal of high trust and mutual bonding, the Senators in the US introduced a resolution in the US Senate, which states that Arunachal Pradesh is an “integral part of India” and supports India’s “sovereignty and territorial integrity.
US Senate Resolution : State of Arunachal Pradesh an integral part of India
Resolution lauded the efforts of the Indian Government for initiating steps to defend it’s territorial integrity from aggression and threats emanating from China. It further condemns China for “use of military force” to change the status quo at Line of Actual Control (LAC).
The resolution was introduced by Jeff Markley and Bill Haggerty and co-sponsored by John Cornyn supports India’s Defense Modernization and diversification programs and India’s developmental efforts in building infrastructure in Arunachal Pradesh. Further resolution also commits to deepening US assistance in the region and expresses support for US-India bilateral partnership.

India commended for nation building initiatives
Resolution also commends India for undertaking efforts to secure below fundamental nation building processes such as:
- India’s telecommunications infrastructure;
- examining its procurement processes and supply chains,
- Implementing investment screening standards
- Expanding its cooperation with Taiwan in public health and other sectors
Important Milestone in strengthening Indo-US partnership
Resolution is an important milestone in strengthening US-India partnership in below strategic areas:
- Defence
- Technology
- Economics
- People to people ties
- Enhancing America’s cooperation with India through the Quad
- East Asia Summit alongside its partners in Association of South East Asian Nations and other foras
Statement given by Senator Merkley states that resolution reaffirms that US recognized McMahon line as the International boundary between China and Arunachal Pradesh and debunks Beijing’s claims that Arunachal is India’s territory.
Further the resolution condemns China’s expansionist policies.
Merkely who serves as the Co-Chair of Congressional Executive Commission in China states
“America’s values supporting freedom and a rules-based order must be at the centre of all of our actions and relationships around the world — especially as the PRC (People’s Republic of China) government pushes an alternative vision,”
“This resolution makes clear that the US views the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh as part of the Republic of India — not the People’s Republic of China — and commits the US to deepen support and assistance to the region, alongside like-minded international partners and donors,” “This bipartisan resolution expresses the Senate’s support for unequivocally recognising the state of Arunachal Pradesh as an integral part of India, condemning China’s military aggression to change the status quo along the Line of Actual Control, and further enhancing the US-India strategic partnership and the Quad in support of the Free and Open Indo-Pacific,”
