At a recent event, US vice president Kamala Harris dismissed a heckler who was complaining loudly about the federal government’s lack of action on climate change.
“We are in the middle of a climate emergency. Eighty people have died in Hawaii, Thousands have been displaced by the climate chaos. The planet is burning, and people are dying,” a video of the demonstrator that was extensively posted on social media featured him screaming. Kamala Harris could barely be heard at times because the heckler shouted so loudly.
“We were wondering if you would uphold your promises,” he said. “You and Joe are failing on climate.”
“I’m speaking,” As security cleared the heckler from the audience, Harris answered. This occurs as devastating fire, sparked by gusts from Hurricane Dora, raged across Hawaii last week, spreading across many islands. Maui was particularly heavily struck by the flames because, according to experts, they were started by a combination of hot and dry weather.
The horrific fire left at least 99 people dead, thousands of people displaced, hundreds of people still missing, and mostly destroyed Lahaina, the island’s ancient centre.
Joe Biden claimed to have just spoken with Josh Green, the governor of Hawaii, adding, “I reassured the Governor that Hawai’i will continue to have everything it needs from the federal government, and directed [Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Deanne Criswell] to keep surging resources and personnel as long as it takes. Every asset they need will be there for them.”
