According to US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, if Russia use nuclear weapons against Ukraine, the United States will respond forcefully and has explained to Moscow the “catastrophic consequences” it would face.
Following Vladimir Putin’s veiled nuclear threat last Wednesday in a speech in which he also declared his nation’s first wartime military mobilization since World War Two, Mr. Sullivan’s comments were the most recent American warning.
In his remarks today, Mr. Sullivan did not disclose the nature of the anticipated American retaliation but stated that Washington has discreetly contacted Moscow. “spelled out in greater detail exactly what that would mean.” Mr. Sullivan said that the United States has been in frequent, direct contact with Russia, including during the last few days to discuss the situation in Ukraine and Russian President Putin’s actions and threats.

While giving a speech at UNSC in New York U.S. President Joe Biden accused Vladimir Putin of making “overt nuclear threats against Europe” in reckless disregard for nuclear nonproliferation responsibilities.
To acquire the territory that Russian forces captured during their February invasion of Ukraine, Russia is also holding referendums in four eastern Ukrainian provinces. The referendums have been denounced by Ukraine and its allies as a ruse intended to justify a war escalation and Mr. Putin’s mobilization effort following recent battlefield losses.
As a warning to Ukraine and its Western supporters, Moscow may portray attempts to recover Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia as attacks on Russia itself.
